The year is 2126. It has been thirty years since Iran nuked Washington, D.C.

America has traded security for liberty following the attack, with the suspension of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Constitution isn’t even taught in school anymore. In this environment, Dan “D2” Daniels, a retired Army NCO of the old breed, sworn to protect the Constitution, finds a crashed spaceship and learns that Earth will soon be invaded. Using the technology from the spaceship, Dan forms an army of fellow senior veterans with two missions first, to revive the republic they had sworn their allegiance to, and second, to save that republic—and the world along with it.

Their first foray includes converting the CVN-80, otherwise known as the USS Enterprise, a rusting aircraft carrier waiting to be scrapped, into the first ship of the new space fleet of the Gray Panthers.

A little over a century into the future, international conflicts had resulted in a nuclear attack on Washington, DC, destroying most of the government. Using security as justification, a cabinet secretary takes over the presidency and suspends most of the constitution, using over-regulation to have the government take over many private corporations and muzzle the media to form a socialist regime. Many older military members began to reject the orders from this unconstitutional non-republic government and left their positions to go into a ramshackle style of retirement, which is why veteran Dan Daniels found himself in an Arizona cave hiding his poached bighorn sheep meal from a Homeland Security drone, only to uncover an ancient hibernating alien spaceship shuttle, lost during a battle between two major alien forces within a galaxy wormhole eons ago. Inside the shuttle is an artificial intelligence with a knowledge of amazing technology, as well as information that an alien race will shortly appearing to conquer the earth and enslave humanity. Dan realizes that the alien technology will be valuable to create a militia of fellow vets to defend the earth, but his first order of business for the Gray Panthers is to restore the constitution and republic of the United States. This first book of a science fiction military utopian trilogy focuses mainly on the formation and rise of the Gray Panthers with the near superhuman technology of virtual eternal life, omniscient monitoring and oversight, and super space vehicle construction. There is very little conflict, which is quickly handled by the super technology, a plot characteristic that may be a drag for some readers, but for those readers that are strongly empathetic with military duty and honor, the process of accomplishment by the characters will be respected. There is a bit of a political imbalance in the main theme that will put some readers off.

Gray Panthers Battle for Earth eBook David Guenther Lisa Wilhelm Reviews

I like it, Don't take me wrong. But it sounds too much like a men's version of a bodice ripper to be a serious sci-fiction adventure.
good read i cannot wait for the next one this is a good series
I enjoy stories where competent characters with solid engineering and life skills take advantage of accessible technology to change their worlds and build futures worth living. This is one of those stories.
As a Retired Veteran, this book has many reminders for me. It's hopeful and I enjoyed how there characters continuously put things over on the "Government Elites". Definitely will read book #2.
Sometimes as a veteran, you feel out of touch with the world you live in. To you, the battlefield is always far more real, and right in the back of your mind, than everyday life. Dave Guenther gives a great start to a series where the old veterans get to step back into the ring for one more fight. Good action scenes, plausible military action in space battles, and a terrifying future where America is a socialist "paradise".
Space Opera At its best. I enjoyed the fact that older veterans were worthy of rejuvenation and continued the fight of the Earth and its disputed factions. An entity looking out for the people of earth beyond the squabbling governments was an interesting and fun read. Thanks the entire series has been very enjoyable read!!
This review is for the Audible audiobook version. I really enjoyed Gray Panthers Battle For Earth but it won't be everyone's cup of tea. First, there is the plot type, the Gray Panthers series is a senior citizens' (gray adult) version of a young adult novel. However, it is too sexually explicit (strong "R") to be for young (under 18) adults. In many, if not most young adult sci-fi novels, a 12-16-year-old will find alien technology or an alien robot and use that tech as a 'deus ex machina' super power to save the world. In Gray Panthers Battle For Earth the main character is a war hero and senior citizen who finds alien technology, recruits more senior citizen war heroes and uses them to save American from a repressive and fascistic Progressive/socialist government that has suspended the US Constitution, and then from evil space aliens. It's a fun premise and mostly a fun read, however, the author takes some rather heavy-handed shortcuts in the first book to set up a historic backdrop for the novel, thus the one-star deduction. That said, if you're over 40 and a fan of 1950s Heinlein style young adult sci-fi then you'll likely enjoy this book and series.

A note on the narration The first three books are narrated by the same performer and he does a wonderful job of bringing individuality and personality to each of the characters. I'd rate his performance as 5-stars.
